M.T.V.A.C Trust History:
The Annaprasadam saga has continued its unstoppable journey since 1985, regardless of the flow and the hours of worshipers at the hilltop shrine. However, credit goes to the great 18th-century Telugu poet-saint, Matrusri Tarigonda Vengamamba, who pioneered Annaprasadam in Tirumala by serving free food to relieve hunger to devotees flocking to the Srivari temple nestled in forests thick a few years ago three centuries.
The legends say that he used to organize the distribution of drinking water and Anna Prasadam during the Sri Narasimha Jayanti festival in the month of Vaishaka in Tirumala for ten days. The edicts speak of the lands granted to him by the kings of Dindigul in Golconda.
In tribute to Vengamamba’s outstanding contribution, the TTD has named the whopping Rs.35 crore Annaprasada Bhavan after him as the Matrusri Tarigonda Vengamamba Annaprasadam Complex (MTVAC), which was opened in 2008 on July 11 by the Honorable President of India of the time. , Smt Pratibha Patil.
With state-of-the-art kitchen systems and dining halls that can accommodate 4,000 devotees at a time, the MTVAC serves Annaprasadam to 65,000 pilgrims every day and nearly a lakh of pilgrims during festival days like Brahmotsavams, Radha Sapthami, Vaikuntha Ekadasi, etc.
In 1933, when TTD took over the management of the Srivari temple, it made a small start in meeting the hungry needs of devotees with a canteen that offered snacks at a fair price. Later, in 1965, a canteen was set up in Mandapam, where the Akhanda Harinama Sankeertans is now located. At that time, Idli was priced at 10 paise, vada at 15 paise, tea and coffee at 25 paise and masala dosa at 40 cents, and meals at ₹1.
From 1970 to 1980, TTD operated the Sri Venkateswara Public Canteen (SVPC) in an ANC area. On March 31, 1971, AP CM Sri K Brahmananda Reddy opened the canteen of SV Rest House. Subsequently, a central TTD canteen was opened at the RTC bus station between 1981 and 1984, offering entrees at ₹1.75 and full meals at ₹3. TTD EO Sri PVRK Prasad opened Annaprasada Bhavan offering cost-effective meals and special meals at ₹4.50 and 5000 meals were sold daily.
However, as the daily steps to Tirumala galloped, TTD made efforts to provide free Annaprasadam to devotees and in 1985, then CM of United AP Sri NT Rama Rao started Annadanam’s limited free program with a donation of 10 lakhs ₹ per part of a devotee. LV Ramaiah.
As per the program, free meal tokens were given to devotees after Srivari darshan. What started with 2,000 free meals grew to 14,000 and 20,000. Meals were served to 1,000 worshipers at once in two halls and by 2008 the daily number exceeded 1 lakh (including stalls and queues waiting).
In addition to MTVAC, TTD organized the kitchen in other places also in Tirumala viz. at Vaikunta 1,2 queuing complex and external queuing and food counters at PAC-2. TTD organized the kitchen of Sambar Rice, Upma, Pongal and Pulihora.
The raw material for all preparations is tested at the Tirupati Marketing Center before being sent to Anna Prasadam’s department. Every day 10-12 tons of rice and 7-8 tons of vegetables are used after the Srivari Sevaks clean them, cut them and send them to all the kitchens. Srivari Sevaks also serves and
food to devotees in queues as well as at MTVAC and food counters in Tirumala.
Since SV Nitya Annaprasadam Trust funds crossed ₹1502 crore and now became self-sustaining, TTD has stopped giving grants to Annaprasadam since 2018.
To provide tasty and healthy Annaprasadam to the crowds of visiting pilgrims, TTD now intends to provide more nutritious food to devotees with organic vegetables produced using natural farming techniques. TTD recently convened a meeting with organic vegetable growers in the Rayalaseema region.
With its tireless services, TTD’s Annaprasadam Wing is credited as “Akshaya Patra”, the divine food supply vessel that never runs out, serving millions and millions of pilgrims with delicious food.
